What she came up with is an eccentric but compact mixture of reality and of the abstract. Embedded in the rich tapestry which Burns carefully weaved are profound messages and themes. These are the three words that summarize my thoughts on this Man Booker Prize-winning masterpiece. No one has ever come across a cat apologising and if a cat did, it would patently be obvious it was not being sincere.” ~ Anna Burns, Milkman They go their way, do their thing, are not subservient and will never apologise. They can never be relied upon to shore up a human ego. Who is this mysterious character? How will he disrupt the obscurity of middle sister’s existence? Her idiosyncrasies then caught the attention of a paramilitary she referred to as the “milkman”. Nevertheless, she still stands out in the unnamed city (now get the hind: all the characters and places are anonymous) she lived in. “The day Somebody McSomebody put a gun to my breast and called me a cat and threatened to shoot me was the same day the milkman died,” thus enigmatically begins the tale of middle sister (no specific name, just middle sister).ĭespite her idiosyncrasies, middle sister enjoyed her uninteresting existence under a cloud of obscurity. Without second thoughts (and even though I have tons of to-be-read books on my bookshelves), I immediately immersed into this mindboggling read. It is with great gratitude that I was able to purchase a copy of the book this year. These unspectacular reviews didn’t stop me, rather it only fueled my interest in the book even though I barely have an iota on what it was about.

Inevitably, Anna Burns’ Milkman Man Booker success was met with skepticism.

When a lesser known Irish author’s third work was picked as the 2018 winner, the world of literature can’t help but roll its collective eyes.

On my observation, the Man Booker Prize possesses that unconventional wisdom in picking out its winners. Milkman is a story of the way inaction can have repercussions, in a time when the wrong flag, wrong religion, or even a sunset can be subversive. Despite middle sister’s attempts to avoid him – and to keep her mother from finding out about her maybe-boyfriend – rumors spread and the threat of violence lingers. So when a local paramilitary known as the milkman begins pursuing her, she suddenly becomes “interesting,” the last thing she ever wanted to be. And she has been taking French night classes downtown. In an unnamed city, middle sister stands out for the wrong reasons. Genre: Bildungsroman, Psychological Fiction Synopsis
